Espírito Santo State - Montane and Lowland Atlantic Rainforest

Santa Teresa (Nova Lombardia)

Santa Teresa is located 70 km northwest from Vitória up in the mountains. The average altitude is 670 meters. Nova Lombardia Forest is located 15 km from the center and it covers an area of 6.000 hectares.

 It is the home of different mammal species such as Buffy-headed Marmoset, Capuchin Monkey, Masked Titi Monkey, the endangered Three-Toed Manned-Sloth and others.

The avifauna is very rich. Chances to see Black Hawk-Eagle, Spot-billed Toucanet, Channel-billed Toucan, Buff-bellied and Crescent-chest Puffbird, Yellow-browed Woodpecker, Black-billed Scythebill, Black-capped and White-eyed Foliage-Gleaner, Plain Xenops, Spot-backed Antshrike, White-bibbed and Ferruginous Antbird, Spot-breasted and Plain Antvireo, Streak-capped and Star-throated Antwren, Such’s Antthrush, White-throated Spadebill, Gray-hooded Attila, Sulphur-rumped Flycatcher, Oustalet’s Tyrannulet, Drab-breasted Pygmy-Tyrant, Hangnest Tody-Tyrant, Bare-throated Bellbird, Cinnamon-vented Piha, Greenish Schiffornis, Pin-tailed and Blue Manakin, Wing-barred Piprites, Wied’s Tyrant-Manakin, Gilt-edged, Red-necked, Azure-shouldered and Cinnamon Tanager, Green Honeycreeper and Yellow-green Grosbeak.

Linhares and Sooretama Biological Station

Located 130 km north from Vitória, those 2 spectacular reserves cover an area of 46.000 hectares of primary lowland Atlantic Rain Forest. This area is the home of more than 131 species of mammals such as Geoffroyi’s Marmoset, Masked Titi Monkey, Capuchin Monkey, Red-rumped Agouti, Brazilian Tapir, Jaguar and many others. The avifauna has more than 330 species of birds including a big number of endemics such as the very rare Red-billed Curassow.

Other birds are Solitary Tinamou, White-necked Hawk, Orange-winged, Mealy and Red-browed Parrot, Plain, Blue-throated and Maroon-faced Parakeet, Channel-billed Toucan, Black-necked Aracari, Yellow-throated Woodpecker, Minute Hermit, Swallow-Wing and Crescent-chested Puffbird, Black-fronted Nunbird, Collaredand White-tailed Trogon, Striated Softtail, Band-tailed and White-flanked Antwren, Black-cheeked Gnateater, Scaled and Scalloped Antbird, Rufous-capped Antthrush, Red-headed and White-crowned Manakin, White-winged Cotinga, Screaming Piha, Black-headed Berryeater, Opal-rumped, Turquoise, Yellow-backed and Flame-crested Tanager, Yellow-green Grosbeak and many others.
