Espírito Santo State - Atlantic Rainforest

 On this tour it is possible to see 5 different species of primates, including the Wooly Spider Monkey (one of the 25 most endangered species on Earth), other mammals such as the Three-toed Manned-Sloth and lots of rare birds such as the world’s rarest member from the Cracidae family, the Red-billed Curassow and the endemic Black-headed Berryeater, lots of antbirds, flycatchers, parrots, parakeets and over 14 different species of hummingbirds and many other birds.

Detailed Itinerary

Day 1 - Vitória / Santa Teresa (Nova Lombardia Forest)

Arrival at Vitória Airport (VIX) in the state of Espírito Santo. Transfer to Santa Teresa (2 hours). Depending on arrival time, we may be able to visit Mello Leitão Museum. This a great place to watch and photograph hummingbirds. Opportunities for Rufous-breasted and Scale-throated Hermit, Swallow-tailed Hummingbird, Sombre Hummingbird, Black Jacobin, Brazilian Ruby, White-vented Violet-Ear, Violet-capped Woodnymph, Glittering-bellied Emerald, Frilled Coquette, Amethyst Woodstar and others. Check- in at Hotel Solar dos Colibris.

Day 2 - Nova Lombardia Forest
Full day birding in the Atlantic Rainforest area.

The target bird species are Black Hawk-Eagle, Spot-billed Toucanet, Channel-billed Toucan, Buff-bellied and Crescent-chest Puffbird, Yellow-browed Woodpecker, Black-billed Scythebill, Black-capped and White-eyed Foliage-Gleaner, Plain Xenops, Spot-backed Antshrike, White-bibbed and Ferruginous Antbird, Spot-breasted and Plain Antvireo, Streak-capped and Star-throated Antwren, Such’s Antthrush, White-throated Spadebill, Gray-hooded Attila, Sulphur-rumped Flycatcher, Oustalet’s Tyrannulet, Drab-breasted Pygmy-Tyrant, Hangnest Tody-Tyrant, Bare-throated Bellbird, Cinnamon-vented Piha, Greenish Schiffornis, Pin-tailed and Blue Manakin, Wing-barred Piprites, Wied’s Tyrant-Manakin, Gilt-edged, Red-necked, Azure-shouldered and Cinnamon Tanager, Green Honeycreeper and Yellow-green Grosbeak. There is also the opportunity to see Buffy-headed Marmoset and Masked Titi Monkey.

Day 3 - Santa Teresa / Muriqui Project – Santa Maria de Jetibá / Santa Teresa
A day to explore the Muriqui Project and its protected Atlantic Rainforest. We will look mostly for primates. Opportunities for Woolly Spider Monkey, Three-toed Manned-Sloth, Buffy-headed Marmoset, Brown Howler and Masked Titi Monkey and birds similar to the ones of day 2 – Santa Teresa. Return to Santa Teresa in the end of the afternoon.

Day 4 - Santa Teresa / Vale do Rio Doce Natural Reserve
After breakfast we leave for Linhares, where we are going to stay for the next days. Check-in at the Hotel located in the reserve. After lunch, birding in the reserve.

Day 5 & 6 - Vale do Rio Doce Natural Reserve / Sooretama Biological Reserve
All days birding in the reserve.
We will look for Solitary Tinamou, White-necked Hawk, Orange-winged, Blue-headed, Mealy and Red-browed Parrot, Plain, Blue-throated and Maroon-faced Parakeet, Channel-billed Toucan, Black-necked Aracari, Yellow-throated, Red-stained, Blond-crested and Yellow-fronted Woodpecker, Minute Hermit, Swallow-Wing and Crescent-chested Puffbird, White-fronted Nunbird, Collared and White-tailed Trogon, Striated Softtail, Band-tailed and White-flanked Antwren, Black-cheeked Gnateater, Scaled and Scalloped Antbird, Rufous-capped Antthrush, Red-headed and White-crowned Manakin, White-winged Cotinga, Screaming Piha, Black-headed Berryeater, Opal-rumped, Turquoise, Yellow-backed and Flame-crested Tanager, Yellow-green Grosbeak

Day 7 – Vale do Rio Doce Natural Reserve / Vitória
After breakfast, transfer to Vitória Airport.
