Emas National Park - Cerrado Endemics and Rarities

    On this tour is possible to see over than 200 bird species, including rarities like Lesser Nothura, Blue-and-yellow Macaw, Yellow-faced Parrot, White-winged Nightjar, Horned Sungem, Planalto Foliage-Gleaner, Cock-tailed Tyrant, Black-masked Finch, Cone-billed Tanager and many other birds and mammals such as Manned Wolf, Giant Anteater and others.
    Birding in Emas NP needs time. We cover a big area of the park and most of its habitats variations. This is the tour for those looking for many of the Cerrado endemics and rarities.

 

Day 1 – Campo Grande / Chapadão do Céu
Meet in Campo Grande Airport and drive to Chapadão do Céu where we are going to stay the next 5 nights.

Day 2 – Emas National Park
After an early breakfast we drive to Emas NP. As an introduction to the area we will look for Whistling Heron, Greater Rhea, Long-winged Harrier, Aplomado Falcon, Blue-and-yellow Macaw, Red-shouldered Macaw, Yellow-faced Parrot, White-eared Puffbird, Streamer-tailed Tyrant, Curl-crested Jay, White-banded Tanager, White-rumped Tanager and man other species.
Every day while visiting the park we have chances to see mammals such as Manned Wolf, Giant Anteater, Pampa’s Deer, Brazilian Tapir and others.

Day 3 – Emas National Park
Full day exploring the NP area. We are going to explore the gallery forests and its surrounds in the NP. The target species are Pale-crested Woodpecker, White-wedged Piculet, Little Woodpecker, Rufous-tailed Jacamar, Black-fronted Nunbird, Red-billed Scythebill, Rufous Casiornis, Planalto Foliage-Gleaner, Barred Antshrike, Large-billed Antwren, White-striped Warbler, Flavescent Warbler, Helmeted Manakin, Silver-beaked Tanager and the recent rediscovered and rare Cone-billed Tanager.

Day 4 – Emas National Park
Today we concentrate in the Grasslands and Cerrado and we will look for Spotted Nothura, Lesser Nothura, Red-winged Tinamou, White Woodpecker, White-vented Violet-Ear, Campo Miner, Pale-breasted Spinetail, Rufous-winged Antshrike, Rusty-backed Antwren, Collared Crescentchest, Sharp-tailed Tyrant, Cock-tailed Tyrant, Black-masked Finch, Marsh Seedeater, Chestnut Seedeater, Capped Seedeater and Rufous-rumped Seedeater.

Day 5 – Emas National Park
Today we are going to cross the NP to its Northern section where is located a nice forest. On the way we have chances to see more Blue-and-yellow Macaw and Yellow-faced Parrot, Blue-fronted Parrot, Toco Toucan, Red-legged Seriema, Horned Sungem, Glittering-bellied Emerald, Chapada Flycatcher and Rufous-sided Pygmy-Tyrant. In the Northern section we will look for Undulated Tinamou, Fork-tailed Woodnymph, Chestnut-eared Aracari, Blue-crowned Motmot, Planalto Woodcreeper, Plain Antvireo, White-throated Spadebill, White-bellied Warbler, Pectoral Sparrow and other forest species. Driving back South we will look for the rare and localized White-winged Nightjar.

 Day 6 – Emas National Park / Chapadão do Céu / Campo Grande
After breakfast we leave to Campo Grande to take our flights back home.
