Canastra NP, Caraça & Caratinga - Giant Anteater, Maned Wolf, Primates & Birds.

You will see the fauna from 2 different habitats, Cerrado (Brazilian Savannah) and the Atlantic Rain Forest. It offers a great opportunity to see 6 different species of primates, the Giant Anteater, the Manned Wolf, over 150 bird species, including the very rare Brazilian Merganser and a bunch of other rarities and endemics.

Detailed Itinerary

Day 1 – Belo Horizonte / São Roque de Minas (Canastra National Park)
On your arrival at Belo Horizonte International Airport you will be welcomed and transferred to São Roque de Minas (345 km), where Canastra National Park is. Check-in at the lodge. Dinner. Overnight at Hotel Chapadão da Canastra.

Days 2 & 3 – Canastra National Park
All days exploring Canastra National Park area.
We will look for Greater Rhea, Spotted Nothura, Black-chested Buzzard-Eagle, Crowned Eagle, Red-legged Seriema, Brazilian Merganser, Golden-capped, White-eyed and Reddish-bellied Parakeet, Toco Toucan, Stripe-breasted Starthroat, White-vented Violet-Ear, White-eared Puffbird, Surucua Trogon, Campo Miner, Firewood Gatherer, Brasilia Tapaculo, Collared Crescent chest, Sharp-tailed Tyrant, Cock-tailed Tyrant, Streamer-tailed Tyrant, Gray-backed Tachuri, Crested Black-Tyrant, Greenish Schiffornis, Helmeted, Pin-tailed and White-bearded Manakin, Ochre-breasted Pipit, Rufous-headed, Guira, Cinnamon, White-rumped and Cinnamon Tanager, Black-throated Saltator, Yellow-rumped Marshbird, Black-masked Finch, Cinereous Warbling-Finch, Great Pampa-Finch. We will also look for Pampa’s Deer, Giant Anteater and Manned Wolf.

Day 4 – São Roque de Minas / Caraça Natural Reserve
Transfer to Caraça Natural Reserve after breakfast. Afternoon birding in Caraça. Check-in at Caraça Natural Reserve.

Day 5 – Caraça Natural Reserve
Full day birding in Caraça.
Our target bird species in Caraça are Slaty-breasted Wood-Rail, Dusky-legged Guan, Hyacinth Visorbearer, Brazilian Ruby, Violet-capped Woodnymph, Crescent-chested Puffbird, Robust Woodpecker, Scaled Woodcreeper, Pale-breasted and Pallid Spinetail, Buff-fronted and White-eyed Foliage-Gleaner, Sharp-tailed Streamcreeper, Large-tailed Antshrike, Ferruginous, Ochre-rumped, Dusky-tailed and White-bibbed Antbird, Serra Antwren, Rufous Gnateater, Mottle-cheeked Tyrannulet, Shear-tailed Gray-Tyrant, Gray-backed Tachuri, Drab-breasted Pygmy-Tyrant, Hangnest Tody-Tyrant, Sulphur-rumped Flycatcher, Blue and Pin-tailed Manakin, Swallow-tailed Cotinga, Cinnamon-vented Piha, White-rimmed Warbler, Gray-eyed Greenlet, Fawn-breasted, Cinnamon, Gilt-edged and  Brassy-breasted Tanager and Pale-throated Pampa-Finch.

The target mammals’ species are Masked Titi Monkey and Tufted Ear-Marmoset. Every night after dinner we will wait for the Manned Wolf at the Church’s Patio.

Day 6 – Caraça Natural Reserve / Caratinga (Caratinga Biological Station)
Early morning in Caraça and before lunch, check-out and transfer to Caratinga arriving at the end of  the afternoon. Check-in at Vind´s Hotel.

 Day 7 - Caratinga Biological Station
Today we focus on Caratinga Biological Station.
We will look for Wooly Spider Monkey (largest primate in Americas), the endemic Buffy-headed Marmoset, Brown Howler and Capuchin Monkey.

Besides the primates, we will look for Blue-winged Macaw, Vinaceous Parrot, Black-necked Aracari, Ferruginous Pygmy Owl, Ocellated Poorwill, Reddish Hermit, Sapphire-spangled Emerald, Black-necked Aracari, Violet-capped Woodnymph, Rufous-tailed Jacamar, Crescent-chested Puffbird, Rufous-capped Motmot, Variable Antshrike, Scaled Antbird, Black-cheeked Gnateater, Streamer-tailed Tyrant, Eared Pygmy-Tyrant, White-bearded Manakin, Rufous-headed Tanager, Pileated Finch.

Return to Caratinga at the end of the afternoon.

 
Day 8 - Caratinga – Belo Horizonte
In the morning, check-out and departure to Belo Horizonte. Transfer to the airport or to the final destination.
